The LIRR Today website update

The LIRR Today's online website has been updated to reflect a new theme (including a new color scheme and a sans-serif font) and make some slight layout changes.  The new website is now live at new.thelirrtoday.com.  The new website also features HTTPS by default.

The new website continues to be a work in progress, as I make updates and changes to old static pages and links, add new content and options, and better organize items to make it easier to search and find information about the topics you are interested in.

Search functionality restored

The search box functionality has been restored and upgraded to make it easier to find information in older items.  Entering your search terms into the box on the right-hand sidebar will return the full text of posts matching your search.  The default order is search by relevance, but you can also sort the results by date by clicking in the results box at the top of the page.

The updated search box also works with browser search engine shortcuts, like in Google Chrome, to allow you to bring up search results directly from your address bar.  To configure this in your browser, set the search target URL to https://www.thelirrtoday.com/search?q=%s

Other ways to find and filter posts

If you're interested in reading all posts for a particular area or topic, you can bring up all relevant results in reverse-chronological order by clicking the links for a branch, or one of the several dozen categories to refine by station, major project, or topic.  I have gone through most of the old posts in an effort to clean up the categories to make it easier to find what you are looking for.

You can also use the links at the bottom of each item to see more items related to that topic.

Commenting

Commenting remains available on all items, though discussion threads on some older posts may be closed automatically after extended periods of inactivity.  Commenting on The LIRR Today is done via Disqus, and you can see more information on how to leave feedback on posts at this page.

Commenting on posts is encouraged and welcomed, so long as you don't abuse the power.  All comments must abide by The LIRR Today's comments policy.

Broken website links

I have tried as much as possible to clean up and correct broken or misdirected links as I have been upgrading various portions of the site, but I haven't caught everything (and the new site is still a work in progress!).  If you find a broken link or are encountering some other sort of problem browsing the website, please do let me know (and let me know which URL is giving you trouble) so I can fix it.

You can bring broken links or other website navigation issues to my attention by using the contact form, leaving a comment on this page below, or e-mailing feedback@thelirrtoday.com.

External links and image hosting failures

Unfortunately, a common issue on the internet is links to external sites going stale, or image hosting failures.  This can happen, for example, if an external site moves a page, changes the URL, or deletes a page altogether.  Some websites (often local news stations) remove or archive their old information as a matter of course to cut down on web hosting costs, so the links end up broken.

While it's not possible to reconcile all of these issues, especially on posts that are a couple of years old, please also feel free to bring these issues to my attention...in some cases, it is possible to obtain and link to an archived version of the page, and I can update the link for everyone accordingly.

Thank you in advance for your patience as the website gets upgraded...if you have any suggestions, run into any problems, or have something new you would like to see, please always feel free to reach out using the contact form, leaving a comment on this page below, or e-mailing directly at feedback@thelirrtoday.com.
