Massapequa Station Renovation Update 1/20

On my way into the city yesterday I stopped by Massapequa to see how the work on the platform rehabilitation project was going.  My last visit to the station was just 10 days ago, but earlier in the week I heard that the crews had gotten a crane on site and have begun to lift in several platform sections.

When I arrived I found that crews at the station have gotten nearly four car lengths worth of platform installed on the west end of the station.  It is looking like the contractor had the platform segments per-fabricated elsewhere and then trucked to the station site.  Getting a quick glimpse at the giant concrete slabs from the parking lot leads me to believe that a majority of the holes for the canopy supports, light poles, etc. have already been cut into the concrete to help make the installation easier down the line.

In between trains, the crews then used a crane which they brought in for the occasion to lift the large slabs into place.  When I visited, they were not lifting any further pieces into place, but it did look like they had a number more sitting in the parking lot to the south of the station.

Anyways, it looks like they will have the entire platform in very soon.  After that it will just be a matter of installing the canopy (which is likely also per-fabricated elsewhere and shipped to the site), and doing the electrical, lighting, etc.  The crews are supposed to have the entire western half of the platform open and ready to go by this spring, at which point they will move on to the eastern half.

I'll leave you with several photos of the station that I took today:

As always, you can find all the remaining photos, and many more photos of LIRR related things, on The LIRR Today's Flickr Page.
